The European Review of Organised Crime (EROC) welcomes the following types of contributions for publication:
Original articles. Original contributions on any topic of relevance to EROC. There is no standard length but 8,000 words is a useful target (notes and references included). Contributions should be well-focused and relevant to EROC’s area of interest and contain well supported arguments. Research articles should contain original research results or review existing results in an original and interesting manner. Although we generally welcome research articles that contain both theoretical and empirical elements, purely theoretical contributions engaged in an in-depth conceptual inquiry are also welcomed. After a preliminary assessment by the editors, all suitable articles will be sent out to at least two peer reviewers (double-blind process).
Practitioner’s insight. Short contributions from practitioners that evaluate their own work or the work of their colleagues, as well share their experience of working in the field. The goal is to raise awareness about what practitioners do, what kind of results they have achieved, what kind of challenges they have encountered in the past as well as what they see as obstacles in future. Contributions should between 4,000 and 8,000 words. After a preliminary assessment by the editors, all suitable contributions will be sent to at least one reviewer (double-blind process).
Debates. Short contributions (4,000-8,000 words, notes and references included) engaging in the discussion of questions of academic, policy, and general relevance related to EROC’s main areas of interest. We expect authors with an academic track to compare various bodies of literature and identify possible trends and developments. For non-academics, we suggest that policy developments are studied through a critical approach and discussed in terms of their feasibility, value, and possible outcomes. The aim of a debate essay is not to present a rigid academic argument per se, but develop a framework that is informative and intellectually stimulating. After a preliminary assessment by the editors, all suitable debate contributions will be sent to at least two peer reviewers (double-blind process).
Research notes. Short contributions (4,000-8,000 words) making a statement about a particular phenomenon or area that relates to EROC’s expertise. Research notes are usually meant to contain time-sensitive information that applies to the current day’s phenomenon or that serves to shed light on future trends. The goal of publishing research notes is to engage in the production and dissemination of ideas in the study on organised crime that is informative and enlightening. Whereas the purpose of a debate essay is to raise questions to be answered in future research and provide overall direction to the research, the goal of research notes is to report on already accomplished research and discuss its relevance and input in the wider literature.
The journal also welcomes responses to the contributions it publishes. If authors are interested in contributing to the journal but still have questions, please do not hesitate to address these to the editorial team at: european.review.oc(at)gmail.com.
Please make sure your submission includes the following separate files: Title Page; Manuscript; Tables and Figures. To ensure anonymity in the review process, do not include the names of authors or institution in the Manuscript file. Only files in .doc format will be accepted.
Title Page. The first page of the manuscript should bear the title together with a short abstract (200 words max.) and 4 to 6 keywords representing the main content of the article. Please include in this file also the names of the authors in the correct order, their institutional affiliations, and all relevant contact details (e-mail and postal addresses, telephone numbers). The email addresses will normally be displayed in the online article. If there is more than one author, clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, and also post-publication. Contact details must be kept up to date by the corresponding author. The affiliations should be those where the research was conducted. Subsequent changes of affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please supply a short biographical note for each author (100 words max.). Please include also an exact word count of the manuscript.
Details of all funding sources and acknowledgements should be included in this file. Authors should obtain permission to acknowledge from all those mentioned. Authors must also disclose any competing interests.
Manuscript. Each contribution submitted to EROC should be in English, typed in double spacing, with pages numbered consecutively. British English spelling and punctuation is preferred. Please use double quotation marks, except where “a quotation is ‘within’ a quotation”. Please use footnotes and not endnotes, and try to keep them to a minimum.
Please follow the Harvard system of referencing when submitting your article. References should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Unpublished works should only be mentioned in the text.
Please find the referencing style guide below:
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact european.review.oc(at)gmail.com.
Tables and Figures. Tables and figures should be provided as separate files. They should be cited in text in consecutive numerical order and their preferred location should be indicated in the manuscript (e.g., Table 1 here). It is in the author’s interest to provide the highest quality format possible. Please note that tables and figures should be used sparingly and contain only essential data. Please also note that it is the responsibility of the authors to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures or tables that have previously been published elsewhere.
Authors should send their contributions as an e-mail attachment to european.review.oc(at)gmail.com. Articles are reviewed on the understanding that they are submitted solely to EROC and have not been previously published or under consideration elsewhere. When submitting the manuscript, authors should also send us a declaration that “the article has not been published or sent for publication elsewhere”.
